All Referrers Overview + Video
Physicians receive referrals from a variety of sources. It's important to understand both the sources of the referrals and the organizational relationships that drive referrals. Captive physicians, physicians employed by a health system, may have less flexibility to refer out of the system, while independents may be more likely to refer outside of their practice.
Use this report to understand how the physician shares patients within their community of healthcare providers. This report provides insights into the types of physicians the focal physician may coordinate care.
- An inbound referral represents physicians who saw patients prior to the focal physician. An outbound referral summarizes physicians who care for patients after seeing the focal physician. This report not only names the top inbound referral sources and the top outbound destinations, but also summarizes the specialty and facility affiliation of the providers who share responsibility for caring for overlapping patients.
- This report also indicates the degree to which a physician’s referral network shares similar facility affiliations. You may learn the physician’s referral community includes physicians affiliated with other facilities or health systems than their own.
- Hospital administrators and physician leaders care about whether patients are being cared for within their affiliated networks or if the patient seeks care from a wider range of physicians. Revenues and costs may be impacted negatively if referral networks are not closely monitored and optimized to manage and coordinate the patient’s care.
- There is also a visual breakdown of the specialties of the referral physicians by percentage.
