How do I search keywords using advanced operators?

H1 Search provides the ability to search using AND, OR and NOT operators in the primary search bar.

 Guidelines

When searching keywords, the following guidelines should be followed: 

  • Capitalize operators (OR, AND, NOT).
  • Place conditions with multiple words in quotes  (i.e., “heart disease”). Without quotes multiple words will be treated as separate words.

Without quotes

With quotes

Heart Disease = Heart AND Disease

“Heart Disease” = “Heart Disease” 
  • Use parentheses to define conditions to evaluate first.

Order of Operations: 

The order of operations determines how keywords are evaluated when returning results. 

Quotes “ “ 
  • Defines multiple keywords (phrases) for matching. Phrase matching is strict, taking into consideration the order of words. 
  • Without quotes an “AND” will be inserted between words.

Parentheses ( ) 
  • Defines combinations of keywords to be evaluated first in the order of operations when generating search results.
  • Parentheses within quotes will treated as part of a keyword search
    e.g. "(atopic dermatitis)"

AND
  • Defines two or more keywords to evaluate together. Results returned will match both keywords. Order of words does not impact results returned.

OR
  • Defines two or more keywords to evaluate when returning results. 
  • Using OR will return all results that match to a single term defined. Order of words does not impact results returned.

Ability to search on multiple keywords to identify KOL profiles matching either keyword. Only one keyword needs to match for a result to be included.
  • Asthma OR "Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction"
  • "Nasal polyps" OR polyposis

AND

Ability to apply two or more keywords when searching KOL profiles. All conditions must be met for a matching result to be included.
  • "Hair Loss" AND Dandruff
  • Asthma AND disparities

NOT

Ability to define keywords to exclude when searching for KOL profiles.
  • "heart failure" NOT HFpEF
  • "non small cell" NOT "small cell"

NESTING

Combining two or more operators to define search results returned. First query in parentheses acts as a comparison for the following query. 
  • (Asthma OR "exercise induced bronchoconstriction") AND diversity
  • (asthma OR "exercise induced asthma") AND (disparities OR socioeconomic) 

How do I nest in search? 

Nesting enables searching across multiple keywords using an initial combination of keywords (e.g., grouping in parentheses) to define results that will be compared to a subsequent combination. Up to 3 nests can be added to a query. 

Special care should be taken when nesting to ensure queries return the desired results. Best practice is to use:

  • Parentheses to define groupings to evaluate first

  • Include quotes on keyword terms
